You are invited to the launching of Joaquin Sy's Filipino translation of renowned Chinese writer Bai Ren's novel Nanyang Piaoliuji, June 29, 6pm, at the Balay Kalinaw, UP Diliman.
Attached is National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario's blurb for the book, published by UP Press. Also attached is the book cover design done by a daughter of Prof. Randy David.
If you happened to be in the vicinity, please drop by the book launch.

San Juan Cityhood
San Juan is now a city! Congratulations! I know that cityhood means a bigger budget aand that the mayor has all these plans like opening a college but citihood means only one thing to me:
When I join the Miss Universe pageant, I can come out on stage in my Pitoy Moreno gown and say in stilted English (para may foreign effect), "Hello, my name is glossgirl and I come from beautiful San Juan City, Philippines!" *spreads arms*
Har, har, har.

Jay-R Rocks!
Attended the Unisilver contract signing. This year's endorsers include Sam Milby, Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, and last but not the least, Jay-R. I got to hang out with KC and Comnnie (after so long!), and Brutalgrace (who, by chance, was led to our table), and Jay-R.
While most of our "hanging out" with Jay-R was actually an interview, which was fun because Jay-R is a really nice guy, what was really fun was what went on off the record. Jay-R was very professional, but kalog. Talking to him, you forget that you're talking to a celebrity, unlike *other* people I'm not going to mention.
Everyone left the presscon as Jay-R fans (as if we weren't already!). My Jay-R piece is going up on my GMA Pinoy TV column, so watch out for it!

So Much for My Vacation
I have no self control whatsoever. Just days after announcing my "leave" from writing, I've accepted a freelance job, attended a presscon, and started a story.
Oh well. I guess in this case, lack of self-control is a good thing.

The Things You Find in Contracts
Was going through some of Bruce's old contracts the other day. While I was leafing through a Lease for one of his properties, I came across a clause banning the Lessee from bringing "Dangerous and Obnoxious Chemicals" into the building.
Yeah, I wouldn't want obnoxious chemicals on my property, either.
Me: So, what do you think? My interior decorator came highly recommended.
Obnoxious Chemical: By whom? The ugly house squad?
Me: Um. Are you leaking? My very expensive Persian carpet's corroding around you.
Obnoxious CHemical: No, I was doing it on purpose. Fugly thing's got to go!
Yup. I definetly wouldn't want obnoxious chemicals on my property.

Politicians Who Look Like Celebrities
We all know that sometimes, politicians look like actors. The best example in this country would be our current president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who (they say) bears a striking resemblance to Nora Aunor. They say it's because of the mole. But by that logic, wouldn't she look like Cindy Crawford as well? I think my head is beginning to ache...
Anyways, we aren't the only country who has celeb look-alikes in the government. Tony Blair, the British PM who is due to step down at any moment, kind of looks like Kevin Costner.
Shinzo Abe, Japan's new PM who I think is still trying to smooth over a boo boo he said about Japan's use of Comfort Women during WWII (from what I understand, he sort of kind of not really but really did deny they existed, sort of, but not really) sort of reminds me of Judge Reinhold.
This is pushing it but Nicolas Sarkozy, France's newly elected president, looks like Sylvester Stallone in some angles and Tony Shalhoub when viewed from afar.
But I know that you'll agree with me when I say that Batangas' new governor looks a lot like Vilma Santos!
I love you, Lucky!

Goodbye, World!
No, this isn't a sucide note.
At least not yet.
I'd just like to say goodbye to everyone before my brain degenerates into mush, albeit mush that is capable of watching DVDs for 10 hours straight (I'm still in training).
So.
No more fiction, no more magazine articles, no more coherent convesations. I am giving my life to the gods of the small screen. I will live my life ( and my dress size vicariously through the actors, content to lie on the couch, make like a vegetable, and eat like a pig. *sigh* What bliss.
I'm going to heaven, boys! I'm going to *zonk*

Happy Sweets
Here's one thing to remember: don't watch the live action version of a Manga *directly* after watching the anime version. You are bound to be disappointed. I hear Luis did that with Honey and Clover. I recently tried it with Death Note. The anime is interesting. I'd say fun, but that would make me perverse. Oh wait, I already am. Perverse, ha, hindi pervert! Although if anyone knows where I can find good Light/L slash, I wouldn't mind you telling me. I've finished the first arc of Death Note, and have to go find the second.
Meanwhile, I'm consoling myself with Studio 60. If that's how American TV shows are really run, then I envy them a lot. Big sets, big offices, stars who help research material and write skits... I don't know why the show got cancelled because if there's one show where suspension of disbelief is in full effect, that's it.

The Bloomfields
Because internet has been down fora month, I wasn't able to post about my The Bloomfields article, which appeared on www.pulse.ph.
All I can say is that they are very nice boys who play really groovy music. Let's boogie!

Another Day In Court
So I had to go to court again. This time... nothing happened. There were no car chases, no convulsing judges. Instead, the people we were sing didn't show up. Sooooo... apparently, if you're being sued and you don't show up for your hearing, the judge issues a warrant for your arrest.
It's very weird to be partially responsible for someone's impending arrest.
It's also very weird to be in the same room with actual theives and attempted murderers and such.
Court is such a weird place

Yummy
Marketman (of marketmanila.com) sent me a signed issue of Yummy, which did a feature on him (instant autograph!). I had interviewed him for an article on Philipine bloggers earlier for Filipinas magazine.
I have to admit, until now, I'd never seen the inside of Yummy before. Turns out it's a great mag for people (especially busy ones) who like to cook. The recipes inside are simple, but the outcome (at least the magazine pics) looks elaborate.
So thanks Marketman for the token and forintroducing me to a new mag!
