Rogue February 2008

Just saw the February 2008 issue of Rogue magazine, the one with KC Concepcion on the cover. Apparently, the issue is almost sold out, most probably because of the feature on photographer Shawn Yao, where she does yoga half-naked.

My article on my encounter with Neil Gaiman appears in this issue, accompanied by beautiful photographs taken by At Maculangan, who also photographed Cirio and Eddie.

Rogue Feb 2008 is not sold out. Word has it that Henry Sy commanded that the issue be pulled out of his malls. Heard that John Gokongwei, Jr. is doing the same too.

I can only surmise that it was because of the centerfold "spread" of Shawn Yao. Either the tycoons found Shawn's pics objectionable, or Shawn's family requested the pull-out, prompting the tycoons to oblige out of courtesy to the Chinoy community, or both.

I am glad to be a Rogue subscriber. So my copy gets delivered--before the self-righteous get to them.

I may just blog about it on Textra Extra.

Moment after I posted my comment, I came across this: http://justanothergame.com/2008/02/19/who-is-shawn-yao-and-the-rogue-magazine-mystery/

Hi Roland!

Thanks for the heads up on the matter. :)

Today, I read more of the now collector's issue of Rogue magazine. I read the Neil Gaiman article, of course, among others. Revisiting my blog comments now, I just realized now that you wrote the Neil piece!

Which brings me to something I considered earlier: posting three or four articles from the Feb issue onto the Web. Think about it: while the issue has sold out, no one has actually read any of the articles! The publishers may object, but I feel for the writers whose work remain gang-tied in a bodega somewhere. What do you think?

Hey there, we have no problem with people posting up the articles, when we do find the time to actually finish our website, we'll be putting up all the past articles as well...til then, post away! -- Miguel Mari/Rogue Magazine

Roland Benzon, who are you to say that pulling out the magazine is self-righteous? If you can bloody honestly say that if this happens to your daughter and you won't fuzz about it, then go ahead and preach

hey, anonymous.

what makes you think that i was referring to the parents? you made that inference, not me. it is society, "friends of the family" that are often self-righteous, casting judgment on her and her family. if it weren't for social stigma, there wouldn't be a reason to pull out the magazine in the first place.

and yes, i can honestly say that if my daughter did this, it wouldn't be an issue at all. we raised her to be who she is. past 18, she is on her own, with a mind and body of her own.

i never cared much for what society thinks. i am defined by who i am, what i do, and how i treat people--not by what society thinks; which is why i am unafraid to put my real name on my comments, unlike many invertebrates, hiding in their anonymity.
